About Luddite Wines
The owners of Luddite Wines, Niels and Penny Verburg first met at the Cape Institute for Agricultural Training. She was studying animal husbandry and he was creating his first Shiraz. They have been together since, raised three children and honed his skills as a wine maker travelling from France to New Zealand.
Their dreams of being able to own their own family-run farm have been realised in Luddite and now they make wines as naturally as possible with minimal intervention. Each one has their duties on the farm; whilst Penny makes and sells her own sausage and charcuterie, cares to the vineyard, vegetable garden and pigs, Niels perfects the Shiraz. He was first tried his winemaking skills at Beaumont Wines in 1995 and planted his first Shiraz a year later in the Bot Rivier Valley.
When they first planted their vines in 2001, there was no irrigation and the vines had to be planted by hand. Before the rain mercifully fell on the land, many said it wouldn’t work. Six hectares of their 17 hectares of land is under vine and all planted to Shiraz. 2011 saw Penny plant Luddite’s first block of Chenin grapes. Frantioa, Mission and Leccino olive trees also grow here.
