About Overberg Fynbos Route
The Overberg Fynbos Route, also known as the Southern Overberg Fynbos Route, is a route put together by a group of land owners in the southern Overberg, with the intention of promoting an area rich in fynbos, beauty, nature reserves and pretty towns.
Did you know? The best time of year to experience fynbos at its best is late winter and spring, but at any time of year this part of the world is beautiful.
The Overberg Fynbos Route includes the towns of Stanford, Elim, Gansbaai, Baardskeerdersbos, Pearly Beach and Wolvengat, and incorporates a series of working farms, guest farms and private nature reserves that encourage visitors to experience the splendour of fynbos at its most spectacular.
Fynbos is the natural shrubland, or what is known as heathland vegetation, that grows only in a small belt of the Western Cape. Directly translated from the Afrikaans, it means 'fine bush'. It is the smallest and richest per area unit of the world's six floral kingdoms, its diversity is very high, and 6300 species of the total 9000 are endemic, meaning that you won't find them anywhere else in the world.
Only a very small portion of fynbos is protected and it is thus under threat from alien vegetation, agriculture and urban expansion.
Fynbos is incredibly fragile, despite its capacity to grow in a wind blown, hot region of South Africa. Invasions by alien plants cover around 15 per cent of the Agulhas Plain, excluding farmland. These together with the threat of unplanned fires, harvesting of wild flowers, damage by 4X4s, and developments, place fynbos at risk.
On the route are beaches, hiking trails, forests like Platbos, fantastic birding opportunities and wonderful beaches. It's an area for nature lovers.
