Fisherhaven, Cape Overberg
As one of the top whale-watching destinations in the world and a scenic seaside town, Hermanus certainly promises much in the way of a fun, exciting destination with plenty to see. It is quiet for most of the year. But, when the whales visit (between June and December), and the days start to heat up after a chilly winter, Hermanus becomes a popular spot for weekends away and long beach holidays. This town is home to the suburb of Fisherhaven.
Fisherhaven is less than 15 kilometres from the centre of Hermanus, making it accessible and convenient, but not compromising on its own unique vibe. It is next to the Bot River Lagoon. As a result, it is particularly popular amongst avid bird watchers. Birders should keep an eye out for pelicans, black oystercatchers, flamingos, ospreys, terns, owls, cuckoos, buzzards, yellow-billed kites, and the African crowned eagle. What’s more, this area is the only known wetland habitat for a local herd of magnificent wild horses.
The lagoon is also a fabulous spot for water sports. Visitors staying in Fisherhaven can head out onto the water for some excellent sailing, skiing, boating, wakeboarding, kitesurfing, windsurfing, and hydrofoiling.
The Arabella Country Estate and Golf Course offers a fantastic course within breath-taking surrounds. While golfers make their way around the 18-hole course, their “supporters” can have a bite at the restaurant or indulge in some treatments at the spa.
The history of this area goes right back to the time that it was inhabited by indigenous Khoisan folk. Later, it was used as a base for the Royal Air Force in World War Two. So, it combines natural beauty and intriguing history with plenty of fun. In addition, Fisherhaven and Hermanus are just about an hour outside of the Mother City, Cape Town, and her international airport.
