About Grotto Beach

This wide, seemingly-untouched beach in Hermanus is flanked by the mountains on one side and the ocean on the other, creating a retreat that is as tranquil as it is exquisite. So, it is no wonder that Grotto Beach was awarded Blue Flag status; recognising its ecological value, beauty, safety and accessibility.

Grotto Beach is safe for swimming, surfing, stand-up paddling, body-boarding, and hydrofoiling. The sand is inviting for those that want to enjoy playing beach games, building sand castles, or soaking up the rays while enjoying a good book. Stroll hand-in-hand down the long beach, or work up a sweat with a jog. The entire beach is an impressive 18 kilometres long, promising plenty of room to explore and discover. Thanks to the safe waters and gorgeous sandy stretches, Grotto Beach is ideal for families with little ones of the two-legged and four-legged varieties. Dogs need to be kept on their leads and owners are responsible for picking up after them.

Hermanus is known for the whales that come past here every year between July and December. From the Grotto Beach, you may catch sight of these graceful giants as they splash, blow fountains or peep out from the salty blue. The most commonly seen species are humpback and southern right whales.

In addition to sea and sand, the beach also offers a well-equipped play park as well as excellent picnic and braai (barbecue) areas for families that want to spend the day enjoying the pretty views. The ablutions are well maintained and there is parking available. Life guards are on duty all through the peak season. If you are feeling energetic, take the +/- 18 km walk from Grotto Beach all along the coastline to nearby De Kelders. The views are outstanding and in season you will in all likelihood spot a few whales.

Hermanus is a relaxed holiday town in the Western Cape Province, just an hour outside Cape Town. Grotto Beach is about 10 minutes from the centre of the town, which is home to plenty of restaurants, shops, galleries, and museums.
