And it is here that the charming Rooi Kombuis en Deli can be found. This is an Afrikaans name that translates to “red kitchen and deli”, and is an inviting spot for hungry travellers and all those with a passion for delicious South African cuisine.

Rooi Kombuis is situated on the exquisite Môreson Estate, and the kitchen is run by Toinette du Toit (who also started this restaurant and deli) and Catherine Eybers. Both of these accomplished women are leaders in their fields. Toinette is a qualified chef that was one of the top three contestants on a local reality cooking show, and Catherine has developed a number of recipes that have featured in popular cookbooks.

Together, these ladies form a formidable team, and pride themselves in offering a menu and deli products that are simply spectacular. The menu includes breakfasts (ranging from traditional bacon and eggs to healthy muesli or scones with cheese and jam), lunches and light meals to tempt even the most discerning of diners.

Some favourites include the ploughman’s platter, potato pancakes with chicken livers, and the salami and beetroot salad. Patrons are invited to design their own meals, using the ingredients available at the Rooi Kombuis and the expertise of the chefs. For those wanting to languish in the warm sunshine or enjoy a cup of traditional South African coffee (affectionately known as moerkoffie) with a good book, the comfy couches on the veranda are irresistible.

Ready-made meals are also available for those who want to order in and take these treats home. They change from day to day and include the likes of slow-roasted beef goulash, sweet and sour pork, sticky ribs, and chicken cordon bleu.

The deli is filled with a range of homemade delights (including smoked meats, boerewors and salami), which are perfect for padkos or for snacks back home. Freshly baked goods are on offer and can be made to order for special occasions.
