About Panthera Africa

If you’re visiting the Cape Overberg and have booked accommodation in Hermanus, Gansbaai or Stanford, about two hours from Cape Town; be sure to include a visit to Panthera Africa on your South African holiday itinerary. This is a non-profit facility that is focussed on educating visitors and providing a stunning place at which to interact with some of the world’s most respected predators.

Panthera Africa, situated in Stanford, is a sanctuary for rescued cats. Some of them have been rehabilitated and released back into the wild, while others have recovered from their appalling background and are living a happy, healthy life at Panthera Africa. There are also some that have been rescued and sent to other ethical facilities in South Africa.

No petting or breeding is permitted, because the facility wants these animals to feel as comfortable and safe as possible. Currently, visitors can look forward to seeing brown and white lions, cheetahs, leopards, Bengal tigers, and caracals here. This is a humbling experience. Watch as their muscles ripple beneath their coats, hear them purring and rumbling, and feel their power as they climb trees or enjoy a hearty meal.

The aim of Panthera Africa is to raise awareness about the conditions that many captive animals have to face, and to educate visitors on the role that each of them can play in minimising this global tragedy. Panthera Africa is the mouthpiece for the animals that cannot speak.

This is a fantastic way to spend a morning with the family. More than this, it is great for school tours and team-building initiatives. Motivational talks can be tailored for corporate teams, school groups or youth groups for an injection of some serious inspiration.

Panthera Africa enjoys an idyllic setting too. It is situated on 40 hectares of the gorgeous Cape Overberg winelands. It is surrounded by spectacular mountains, massive trees, and a natural spring.
