About Mountain Treasure Route

Based on the Overberg Tourism map, the Mountain Treasure Route starts on the N2 en route to Swellendam, past Riviersonderend.

Did you know? Swellendam today forms part of the Greater Swellendam Republic – a tourism venture to include Swellendam, Suurbraak, Barrydale, Buffeljachts, Stormsvlei, Malagas and Cape Infanta under one umbrella.

Riviersonderend is a beautiful little town with incredible mountain and river scenery that takes its name from the perennial Sonderend River. It it's mountains and fynbos views you are after, then this part of the world is filled with just that.

A little further along the N2, Swellendam is a vibrant town and regarded as an historical mecca, where the Drostdy Museum will give an incredible account of the history of South Africa.

The town is the third oldest magisterial district in the country and nestles in the foothills of the Langeberg Mountains. Its streets are lined with restored cottages, accommodation, eateries, coffee nooks and interesting looking shops. In particular look out for the little Faerie Sanctuary and stop off at Youngberry Liqueur Farm for a taster.

From Swellendam take the R324 to the tiny village of Suurbraak. You travel through a series of mountains to reach the mission village, that lies in the fold of the Langeberg Mountains on the edge of the Buffelsjags River, just before the incredible Tradouw pass. Scenic beauty doesn't come like this too often – drink in the views.

Explore the village on foot if you can and then take a guided mountain hike, a guided village walk or horse cart ride.

From here head onto the Tradouw Pass to the town of Barrydale for a real treat. The artists enclave is an eclectic mix of restaurants, coffee shops, shops offering nick nacks and pizzas, and accommodation in Barrydale. There are nature reserves, a labyrinth, hikes and walks or simply just chill time. A perfect place to end a tour of the Overberg.
