About Opstal Wine Estate
Opstal estate originated in 1847 when JC Rossouw first acquired the farm named De Opstal bij de Fonteine. It was in 1950 when Carl Everson, grandfather of the current vinter, Stanley began running the farm. Carl decided to make his own wine instead of joining the local co-op winery.
You'll find the winery in the Slanghoek valley surrounded by the Slanghoek and Badsberg Mountains. Their wines include Shiraz, Pinotage and Cinsaut which grow well in their sandy, stony soils on the Western slopes. The alluvial soil beside the Slanghoek River are perfect for growing easy-drinking white wines. 100 hectares are planted to vines. The Sixpence Range was named after shepherd Daniel smiles who watched flocks of sheep between the 1950's and 1960's when owner Stanley Louw was just a boy. Sixpence's son, Andries is retired and still resides on the farm.
The farm of sheep stopped as the vines grew. Third generation workers still work towards making the farm a success and the estate continues to honour them for their contribution to making it a success.
