Ouberg Private Nature Reserve is a property for self catering in Montagu for anyone visiting the Breede River Valley region.
Ouberg Private Nature Reserve is a secluded mountain sanctuary, in the heart of the Karoo, only a three-hour drive from Cape Town. The reserve boasts a variety of self-catering and group accommodations, including exclusive off-grid cabins and a beautifully designed tented camp, all set against the backdrop of magnificent mountain ranges.
The cabins are thoughtfully designed with a blend of comfort and simplicity, offering stunning views, well-equipped kitchen facilities, and cozy dining and living areas. Each cabin is off-grid, powered by solar energy and inverters, ensuring a sustainable yet comfortable stay.
De Kuile Tented Camp provides a unique glamping experience, accommodating up to eight guests in four safari-style tents, each perched on wooden decks. These tents are furnished with two comfortable single beds and feature private decks equipped with chairs and a small table. Guests at the camp have access to shared facilities, including a communal kitchen and dining boma, ablution facilities, and a braai/barbecue boma. During the summer months, a plunge pool on the boma deck offers a refreshing escape.
Guests are invited to explore the expansive 900-hectare nature reserve, ideal for hiking, mountain biking, and bird watching. Discover the hidden treasures of the Klein-Karoo as you immerse yourself in the natural beauty that surrounds you.
Please note that the reserve is situated in a mountainous area, and access roads are unpaved. While a 4x4 vehicle is not required, we recommend using a raised vehicle such as an SUV or bakkie. Sedans with reasonable ground clearance and standard tyres can navigate the main farm road.
Ouberg Private Nature Reserve is uniquely positioned at the meeting point of three of South Africa's distinct biomes: Succulent Karoo, Fynbos, and Albany Thicket. Covering approximately 1,000 hectares in the Klein Karoo, Western Cape, this former farm boasts an astonishing diversity of flora and fauna, thanks to its varied geology, soil composition, topography, and climate.
The ever-changing landscape ensures that no two walks through the veld are alike, with different flowers, plants, insects, birds, and reptiles appearing throughout the year. While many of the reserve's mammals are nocturnal and elusive, camera traps have revealed a fascinating array of species that either reside on the farm or pass through its rugged terrain.
Guests are encouraged to explore the farm on foot, following the existing farm roads or venturing onto game trails. Cyclists are also welcome, with a variety of routes and distances available, catering to all levels of fitness. The reserve's location at the intersection of Ouberg Pass and Driekuilshoogte Roads offers additional opportunities for cycling enthusiasts to enjoy the surrounding area.
• Hiking: Traverse the diverse landscapes and discover the natural beauty of the Klein-Karoo.
• Bird Watching: Spot a variety of bird species in their natural habitats.
• Mountain Biking: Explore the reserve and surrounding areas on two wheels.
• Game Viewing: Catch glimpses of the reserve’s elusive wildlife.
• Star Gazing: Experience the clear night skies and marvel at the stars.
• Rock Climbing: Challenge yourself on the rugged terrain.

• Ouberg Private Nature Reserve offers an unparalleled opportunity to reconnect with nature in a truly unique and breathtaking setting.
What is loadshedding? It refers to the temporary suspension of electricity provided by Eskom, South Africa's electricity provider, to reduce consumption and thereby the load on the national grid. To compensate, South African property owners are turning to solar power, inverters with backup batteries or in some cases generators to keep the power on, wherever feasible.
