About Zebonkey Brewery

Stellenbosch is one of the Western Cape’s premier locations for world-class wines, but Zebonkey Brewery is casting the spotlight onto some innovative and exciting beer varieties too. After having arrived in South Africa from Germany, this dynamic team decided to create a range of beers that was tasty, refreshing and different from what was currently on the shelves.

The range of beers available from Zebonkey now comprises

• Weizen - this Bavarian-style beer is produced using 60% German wheat, which ensures a fruity nose, mild bitterness, and a distinctly creamy aftertaste.
• Smokey - first, a malted wheat is smoked with the buchu herb, and then used to create this special beer, lending it a smoky taste that goes particularly well with meat dishes and biltong, a South African favourite.
• Poseidon - the soft mineral taste of this award-winning beer comes from its being made with 15% sea water, making it the ideal complement for seafood.
• Schwarz Weizen - this beer is made using more than 50% roasted wheat malt, which gives it its dark colour and more intense roasted flavour.

This range of beers means that there is something for everyone, whether they are seasoned beer drinkers with a discerning palate, or someone that likes to indulge in a cold beer on the odd hot summer’s afternoon.

The German principle of beer-making (Reinheitsgebot) is honoured and upheld at Zebonkey. This principle, dating back to the early 16th century, dictates that beers are made using only hops, malt, water and yeast.

The bottles that hold these golden hues are almost as significant as the ingredients themselves. They are 500-millilitres with a swing-top, which means they are slightly larger than most South African beers. The brown glass protects the beer from the harmful effects of sunlight.

Zebonkey Brewery is committed to making the beer-drinking experience even more refreshing and rewarding through its innovative flavours, age-old techniques and untainted passion for beer.
