About Slaley Wine Estate

Vet, ship-buyer and land owner, Charles Hunting, started the Hunting Company in 1874. Amongst his many ventures into aviation and defence and oil, they started making wine. When Martin Hunting moved to the Cape in 1957, he bought the Slaley property and in 1995 his son, Lindsay Hunting, took in 1995 and built a new cellar, bar and tasting room.

Only grapes from the estate are used to make the wine. Some of the early Hunting ships are displayed on the wine labels. Their range includes a fine Cabernet / Merlot blend, a Shiraz, a Pinotage, a Merlot and a Chardonnay. Their Broken Stone label orginates from a stone on the farm with “WCG 1751” inscribed on it. These wines have less wood and more fruit and are produced reductively with longer fermentations. They also have a more ‘social’ range. The estate also boasts 8 hectares of olive groves containing over 3500 olive trees which are 35 years old.

Slaley also host a Farm Market where kids can play on the jumping castle and leave parents to browse the fresh produce, gourmet coffees, wine, sushi and honey. Go fishing on the dam or motorcycle lovers can try the track out. Give their Leccino-Mission olive oil blend a try with its peppery and spicy flavour.
