About Uitkyk Wine Estate
In 1712, Uitkyk was granted as a grazing farm to Jan Oberholzer and later in 1929, Hans Von Carlowitz acquired it. His sons assisted him in developing the land as a wine farm and planted Chenin Blanc, Cape Riesling, Cinsaut and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The estate became well-known for its Carlonet, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cinsaut. Now about 200 hectares of 600 hectares are planted to vines and cultivars include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
Indulge in a brandy and chocolate tasting which includes handmade Huguenot chocolates from Franschhoek and Uitkyk’s Grand Reserve brandy, the oldest estate-matured Potstill brandy in South Africa. Uitkyk’s flagship wine, Carlonet, is now in its 50th year of release.
This was named after a combination of the first winemaker’s name ‘Carlo’ with the ‘net’ from Cabernet on the end. It has showing lots of fruit, plenty of soft, but present tannins and a good juicy length.
When it’s warm, you have to pop in for their scrumptious gourmet picnics and cheese platters. Bring your own picnic blanket and chairs if you so wish and make sure you’ve booked your gourmet picnic basket for two which includes a bottle of wine.
