MCGREGOR - BREEDE RIVER VALLEY

McGregor, Breede River Valley: The mystically imbued town of McGregor lies just 10 minutes from the town of Robertson on Route 62, less than two hours’ drive from Cape Town.

One of the few places in the world to lie directly on ley lines, McGregor is considered a sacred site and a natural energy means that McGregor has attracted artists, healers and a number of colourful characters as residents. McGregor has managed to retain the quaintness of a 19th century hamlet, and cottages are whitewashed with gardens left largely to their own devices with old stone irrigation channels still in evidence. This adherence to historical building style is largely due to an aesthetics committee, which has drawn up a series of guidelines should you consider building in McGregor, regarded as the place where time stood still.

McGregor, named after one of the oldest Scottish clans, lies in a valley surrounded by rolling hills providing a number of walking and hiking opportunities, as well as historical walks around the village itself.

The mild climate makes McGregor a wonderful place to visit in winter and it is only February in summer that can prove a little hot. It borders on the little Karoo, hence star-filled skies and not much pollution.

McGregor lies right in the heart of the Breede River Wine valley and wine tasting is almost obligatory when in this part of the world. There are a number of annual festivals, including the Robertson food and wine festival at the end of October and the museum is worth a visit, although don’t be deceived by its apparent low key atmosphere.
