Stellenrust is one of South Africa’s biggest family owned wine estates. It was founded in 1928 and culminates centuries of skills in wine making. The vines planted range from 4 - 36 years of age over 250 hectares. Half of the estate lays in one the best red wine soil of the Golden Triangle in Stellenbosch and the other half in the cool Bottelary Hills where fine red and white wines are cultivated.
Five years ago, Stellenrust began to allow people to stomp their own grapes and make their own wine which has lead to the range of JJ Handmade wines. 500 cases were produced with only a gravity flow and no machinery. To this day, the experience of making your wine can be enjoyed between harvest months.
These wines are based on French traditions and are really handmade. Their diary was renovated into a boutique cellar where everything works with gravity. Once grapes enter the top, women use wooden stomps to crush the grapes before they ferment naturally. After a basket press is used to extract the grapes’ essence, it is mixed with free running juice and is allowed to age.
Come make your own wine in groups of up to 25 people, get a glass of Cap Classique upon arrival, learn about the farm’s history and take a tractor down to pick your own grapes in the vineyards. Enjoy a full wine tasting and then enter a huge barrel and swim in the grapes before a shower and braai.
