The Proviant Restaurant is a rustic, truly Afrikaans experience, complete with favourite South African cuisine. The restaurant is an old farmhouse, with an expansive terrace, or ‘stoep’ as well it here, as well as a courtyard offering views of Paarl, vineyards and the mountain beyond. The décor is authentically Afrikaans and farmhouse rustic, with local ‘boere orkes’ music playing over the chatter and laughter of diners.
The menu embraces the heartiness of the Afrikaans people, starting with just about the biggest breakfast you’re ever destined to see, like the ‘Boland’, with bacon, liver, eggs, tomato, sausage, steak, mushrooms, chips, jam and toast! There are unusual traditional dishes on offer, such as the ‘Farmer’s Caviar’, which are marrow bones in gravy, perfect for dipping with fresh home baked bread; Bobotie spring rolls and Lamb’s liver. For mains, Proviant offer proper rib-sticking fare and don’t beat about the bush! The lip-smacking pork belly comes with homemade apple sauce; the Venison pie looks scrumptuous, and the South African Plate offers bite-size portions of various delicious dishes. Things remain delightfully local amongst the puddings, with the Rooibos Apple Crumble; Cape Brandy Pudding and the decadent Sticky Pumpkin and Apricot Pudding, served with cinnamon cream.
The deli offers some of the goodies on the menu, as well as homemade ginger beer, baked goods, preserves and old-fashioned sweets. We highly suggest stopping by Proviant Restaurant for a delicious dose of Afrikaans culture.
