One of several hiking trail options in the Limietberg Nature Reserve, hiking up the Krom River is one of the most popular and scenic.

You can park your car in the parking area near the Worcester exit of the Huguenot tunnel before walking under the flyover of the N1.

The initial part of the hike is accompanied by the general drone of the highway. It is not long before the white boot markers lead one up a ridge and away from the tunnel. This initial stage of the walk follows the right bank of the Molenaars River before crossing it and meeting up with the Krom River.

The path now lies above the river for a while before descending to run alongside. There are numerous opportunities to swim in river pools in the shade of indigenous riverine vegetation, and the scenery is breathtaking, particularly if you have headed out early.

There are a couple of sets of pools those who do the trail often use as markers. The 'first pools' are not far into the hike and warrant a tea stop. Push on, as there is still far to go before the waterfall.

The second set of pools lie at the base of the ascent to the waterfall. But before you reach them, you pass through a wonderful area of indigenous forest.

A climb up to the falls is optional and those who don't enjoy chain ladders, or are merely content to nibble lunch whilst waiting for others to enjoy the ascent, may rest here (children easily manage the chain ladders).

There is yet a second waterfall above this one, with a large plunge pool. Be cautious.

Despite being popular, the availability of various river pools means that there is more than enough room for everyone when the hike gets busy.

The way back is simply a return along the same path, slightly more difficult as you find yourself in full sun.
