Near the town of Wellington in South Africa’s Western Cape resides the self-proclaimed boutique wine and vineyard farm Alkmaar. With a rich heritage and history dating back to the 1860’s Alkmaar’s legacy is legendary.
Their selection of hand-crafted, boutique wines, named The Old School, continues in the noble fashion in which the original owner lived out his life. The wines lend their name from the school, one of the very first in the district, which Marinus Jacobus Stucki founded on the estate itself. New owners Bouwer and Nell, who have been entrusted with the legacy from the dawn of this new millennium, have, instead of shaping young minds, “nurtured a young vineyard and practiced the classic art of crafting fine wines.”
The farm has branched out from the original Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot already and included the Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Viognier, Mouvedre, Pinotage and Chardonnay families, all on the seven hectares of Alkmaar. Old buildings have been restored and serve the legacy upon which they were built as wine and maturation cellars as well as an intimate tasting room.
