About Ouma Granny House Museum

The Western Cape Winelands are exquisite, and home to many little towns and villages that tell the tale of a country so full of history, heritage, culture and character. Wellington is one such town, and is situated just 45 minutes away from the Mother City, as Cape Town is widely known, and her international airport. Wellington is known for the fruit, wine and brandy that it produces, and is also the proud home of the Ouma Granny House Museum.

This house is a gorgeous Victorian cottage, filled with the historical delights of yesteryear. The fascinating goodies that can be discovered within its old walls include authentic clothing, baby cots, some of the old glass-plate cameras, a “pounds, shillings and pence” cash register, crockery and cutlery, typewriters, sewing machines, toys and hair accessories, amongst many other little gems.

This is a national monument that was officially opened in 1990. It once belonged to, and was donated by, Mrs Joyce Hoogenhout-Morse, whose husband was the grandson of one of the founders of the Afrikaans language (CP Hoogenhout). It was built in 1876.

The Ouma Granny House Museum is an important part of local South African heritage, and invites visitors from all over the world to take their time examining the many treasures it conceals within.

During your time in Wellington, there are a number of wine and brandy farms to visit, where some of the finest flavours in the world are being produced and can be sampled at leisure. There are also many hiking, running and cycling trails in the surrounding countryside.
