North of Cape Town, in one of South Africa’s cherished wine-growing districts and just outside of Wellington and in the heart of the Bovlei region (upper valley) you can find the long-established Nabygelegen Private Cellar, a farm that enjoys the interaction between diverse soils, slopes and climate.
Nabygelegen delivers premium wines of superb quality and with excellent consistency, all painted with a South African brush. The climate is ideally suited to the vineyards with cold wet and rainy winters balanced by long hot summers cooled off in the afternoon by katabatic breezes coming off the Groenberg. The farm is also luckily to be shielded from the infamous Cape winter storms by the Limiet Mountain Range.
Just over half of the 35 hectare estate has been dedicated to the growth and nurture of cultivars balanced between the reds and whites. Cultivars grown include Cabernet, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Tempranillo planted on the warmer, north facing slopes. You can find the Blancs of Sauvignon and Chenin together with Semillon lower down in the valley facing south.
Nabygelegen has a long and fascinating history of wine-making characterized by people such as the charismatic Lady Anna Lategan. The original cellar dates back further than its inscription of 1815 and is now used as part of the barrel fermentation room where the elegant wines are crafted.
