The Crags, Accommodation Plettenberg Bay

About Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary

Holiday accommodation on the Garden Route is in high demand. And, for anyone that’s visited this gorgeous part of South Africa, that’s no surprise. It is such a fantastic place to see and stay and is home to loads of popular attractions. The Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary remains one of the top attractions in Plettenberg Bay for the whole family.

Situated in The Crags, this sanctuary is home to more than 100 snakes that range from the vibrant-green boomslang to the inquisitive python, and everything in-between. Of course, these are in safe enclosures. But, if you’d like to feel the cool silkiness of their beautifully-marked skin, the tour includes snake interactions.

The indigenous snake pit offers a spectacular insight into the snakes of South Africa and what makes them special, while the snake dome is home to local and exotic snakes from various countries. The giant python room is exactly what it sounds like, and gives visitors the opportunity to get up close to these exquisite snakes. The monitor lizard enclosure introduces you to an impressive reptile that looks prehistoric and is absolutely charming in the flesh.

The guided tour takes an hour and is ideal for reptile enthusiasts or for those that can’t wrap their minds around getting too close to one of these slithering snakes. Still Lawnwood is about more than just its beautiful array of snakes and lizards. It is home to farm animals too, which are always cute and entertaining.

There are walks through the forest to the river for visitors that love the verdant greenery of the Garden Route and want to get some real R & R in nature’s loveliest settings. Families can enjoy a picnic together at the sanctuary’s picnic spots and little ones love burning some road-trip energy in the play area. There is a coffee shop and a curio store at the Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary too.

The sanctuary is wheelchair- and pram-friendly and the parking area is shaded. Bookings are only necessary for groups of 15 visitors or more.
