The Crags, Garden Route

Garden Route accommodation ranges from idyllic forest cabins to boutiques hotels, and a wide variety of lodgings is lying in wait for those travelling South Africa in the pretty area known as The Crags. Perched amongst the idyllic greenery of the Garden Route, just outside the seaside town of Plettenberg Bay and the village of Nature’s Valley, is The Crags. This is a gorgeous area that, while small, offers plenty in the way of attractions, activities and accommodation.

Thanks to the stunning flora and breath-taking vistas here, The Crags is the ultimate spot for travellers looking for adventure and with a love for the magnificent outdoors of South Africa. Some of the local attractions for nature-lovers include walks through the forests and canopy tours, mountain trails that can be walked or cycled, and a huge variety of ocean-based activities (such as water sports, whale-watching tours, and deep-sea fishing).

The Crags stands out as a place in which a stunning variety of wildlife can be enjoyed, particularly at the many sanctuaries. Birds of Eden is a sanctuary that is home to around 3 500 birds, made up of around 200 different species. These birds fly freely in the world’s largest single-dome free-flight aviary. Monkeyland, right next door to Birds of Eden, provides an authentic forest habitat to rescued primates from all over the world. These include exotic lemurs, gibbons and spider monkeys. The Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary is a place of safety for a number of wild cats (including lions, black leopards, jaguars and pumas), as well as many other exciting species. Other wildlife attractions in and around The Crags include the elephant sanctuary, Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre, and the Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary.

Part of The Crags is under vine, and Bramon Wine Estate has a fantastic restaurant with seating amidst the vineyards and excellent food. Accommodation here includes quaint B & B’s, opulent boutique guesthouses, chalets in the forest, and exquisite retreats from the city centre.

The Crags is a prime choice for visitors to the Western Cape as it is centrally situated and in the heart of the Garden Route. It is close to Knysna, Plett, and the Tsitsikamma. Cape Town is about five to six hours’ drive from The Crags, and Port Elizabeth is around two hours away.
