The Mischa farm has been in the family for three generations after ‘Kelpie’ Barns returned from 2nd World War Service and bought a 50-hectare farm just outside of Wellington. He married ballet dancer Yvonne Blake Whose career was set to take off the Ballet Russe in London and Paris. The farm is named after Yvonne’s former Dance partner, Mikael, a family friend and fighter pilot who died in the war. Mischa is the endearing form of Mikael and Russian version of Michael. They began exporting plums and apricots to the UK, whilst his son John focused on vine cultivation and expanding the farm.
Mischa Nursery is now the 4th largest vine nursery in the Southern Hemisphere. His son Andrew produced the first Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon in 1999 which won awards and was soon sold out. He launched Mischa wines and now Mischa Estate comprises four farms of Mischa, Eventide, Dunedin and Talana Hill. The main cultivars are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot with production remaining small-scale. While Gareth runs the vine nursery, Andrew is the winemaker. Find quality red and white wines under the two labels of Mischa and Eventide at this boutique winery.
