A local favourite, Matoppie is a fairly technical route that incorporates a good climb and contour riding, with a number of challenges thrown in – it's rocky and sandy in parts. But the views at the top are worth the effort.

The initial gravel path climbs steadily, steepening after the first hairpin bend, where it also becomes rocky, before evening out. Some single track heads clockwise around Matoppie – where there are good views of the Berg River dam.

The contour trail then becomes uneven, with a few curves thrown in for good measure. Ignore the split to the right, but continue cautiously as the track can wash away in this section.

At the next intersection you hit jeep track, and the trail opens up a bit. Later as you round the eastern side of Matoppie you head onto a forest road. A sharp left bend heralds the downhill jeep track, via four hairpin bends. The path becomes sandy, crosses a bridge and then heads right onto Robertsvlei Road.
