Most of the ride is on the R45 tar road outside Franschhoek alongside the Franschhoek River. Start at the intersection of the R45 with Robertsvlei Road and head towards Franschhoek through farmland (the original name for the farmlands of the area was Franche Hoek, settled by French Huguenot refugees) and then Le Roux (the Coloured township on your left).
The route continues through Franschhoek, leaving the town shortly after passing Reuben's restaurant (left). At the intersection, follow the R45 right, before heading off the R45 onto the tarred section of Robertsvlei Road.
You now ride through farmland, parts of the road lined with oaks. Just after passing a dam on your left, Robertsvlei veers right, and then bends left at a second dam. The first left turn to the right, after the dam, is the dirt section of Robertsvlei Road. Take this all the way back to the start.
