The famous gourmet capital of the Western Cape is the wine valley of Franschhoek. As a valley it is cradled between mountain ranges that display a spectacular view over the luscious vineyard region. Franschhoek has a food and wine route for foodies and wine aficionados, predictably called the Franschhoek Wine Valley Food and Wine Route.

Already regarded as the 'gourmet capital' of South Africa, the map will initiate you into the village of Franschhoek and its surrounds on a journey of wine pairing, estate tastings, chocolate making, cookery classes and demonstrations, olive oil tastings, wine estates, good food and stopovers.

For visitors to Cape Town who enjoy their food and wine, this map, together with the already available Stellenbosch Restaurant Route, will make time spent in the country in two of the Cape's most picturesque villages a complete pleasure.

The idea is that this new rendition will replace the Franschhoek Wine map. But there is also a website that works hand-in-hand with the map, providing a platform on which to book specific experiences – one anticipates that this will be for classes, garden visits, food & wine pairings, and events (wine estates like Eikehof, Franschhoek Pass, Haut Espoir, La Roche and Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons request bookings for tastings), although most of the wine estates (and there are a lot of them) invite visitors without appointment.
