Overnight? Stay at accommodation in Franschhoek, in Western Cape

Anyone that has spent time in Franschhoek knows that this part of the Western Cape offers exquisite beauty in breath-takingly generous quantities. It can be enjoyed from the vineyards, from the little town streets that are flanked with shops, and even from many of the roads. But, the best way to enjoy these stunning surrounds is to immerse yourself in the countryside. Put on some comfortable shoes, pack plenty of water and a snack, and get out there.

The La Motte Hiking Trail showcases the vineyards and mountain contours to perfection. On one beautiful route, you can experience the comfort of the warm sun on your shoulders and the crisp bush air all around you. This is the ultimate way to escape the stress of city living during the hot summer months (the trail is closed over winter).

The circular self-guided route is five kilometres long and is a little challenging in places. There are sheer rock faces, where hikers will need to use the chains to pull themselves up. This requires a little strength and fitness. Once you get to the lapa, you can enjoy a picnic with awesome views before heading back out. The beautiful fynbos plantation (including buchu and proteas) is just gorgeous and well worth the strain of a hike. This hike can also be done with the aid of a guide, and will then take between two and three hours to complete.

Along the way, look out for the adorable Cape clawless otter, Cape fox, steenbok, and many species of birds of prey. There are also snakes in the countryside, so beware where you place your feet. Remember to bring your camera along to capture some of the fun and adventure, but also some of the inordinate prettiness of the mountains of the Western Cape.

After a vigorous hike, there are few things better than a well-deserved wine tasting, paired with some excellent South African dishes.
