Giorgio moved to South Africa with his family in 1974 and it turned out to be the best move for him and for South African wine. He produced his own Grappa distillery in Stellenbosch in 1996 after he grew up distilling Grappa with his father in Italy. For years he was the talented man behind the Meerlust label.
He introduced South Africa's first Bordeaux-style wine, the Meerlust Rubicon and the world recognised it as one of the country's best at the time. Until this day, the Dalla Cia label still produces fine wines and shots of Grappa wrapped in Belgian chocolates. His wife Simonetta Dalla Cia runs a home-based cooking school La Cucina Dalla Cia with her daughter Marta.
When Giorgio turned 60 in 2001, he produced the first wine under the Dalla Cia label. They run a wine and food bar called Pane e Vino (meaning bread and wine). The menu changes every day but includes traditional Italian dishes such as pastas, risottos and crumbed veal. It is said that no Italian meal is complete without a grappa to complete it. Sip on any one of their two blends such as the Pinot Noir Chardonnay and cabernet Merlot.
