About Stellenbosch Art Route

While Stellenbosch is best known for its wine, university and history, it certainly doesn’t disappoint when it comes to its art. The new Stellenbosch Art Route is focussed on collecting a variety of top-notch pieces from galleries, craft markets, and museums that have earned their place on the international art map. This is steadily moving Stellenbosch to the top of the South African art scene, just 40 minutes from Cape Town.

There is a comprehensive map to help visitors to the Cape Winelands to find and explore the pieces, which are scattered around the charming historic town itself, as well as on some of the scenic wine farms around Stellenbosch. These gems include craft markets, art galleries, sculpture gardens, and museums.

The art is a complement to the extraordinary wines that hail from the area, because it celebrates the craft and creativity that is being produced in the Winelands. This creativity goes beyond flavours and bouquets and extends to the use of light, texture and colour to create something that is both beautiful and enticing for the imagination.

The new art map was put together by Stellenbosch 360 (the tourism information office), the Stellenbosch Visio magazine, and some of the local community creatives. This map will help visitors to find some of the best arty spots for a day of culture and beauty. These include public and private art collections. Some of the internationally recognised artists whose work can be found on the Stellenbosch Art Route include George Pemba, Irma Stern, Lionel Smit, and Cecil Skotnes.

The new map was launched officially on 6 November 2018 and is available at the Visitor Information Centre in Stellenbosch, or at a number of the local museums and art galleries.
