About Elephant Walk Trails
For a fun forest walk with a difference, get onto the Elephant Walk in Diepwalle Forest. This fantastic trail can be done in 3 sections. There is a 9 kilometre walk that is marked in black, the second is 8 kilometres and is marked in white and the third trail is 6.5 kilometres long and is marked with red elephant pictures and black on yellow arrows.
All routes begin at the Diepwalle Forest Station which is just north of Knysna, here you can obtain your permit and grab a map or some information sheets to help you identify certain trees and plants along the way. This forest has always been a well known home for the Knysna Elephants with the population depleting in the forest dramatically in recent years. It was thought that there was only one left roaming the forest until recent evidence proved otherwise. If you are lucky enough you may be able to spot one of these majestic creatures along your walk.
The vegetation and trees are impressive with a large variety including Yellowwood trees that are over 600 years old, White Pear, Cape Holly, Stinkwood and Ironwood, to name a few. Walking through the tranquil forest is a must for anyone who loves nature or is looking for an easy walk in a stunning location. Bubbling brooks run through the forest and large trees tower around you in this magical forest. Vervet Monkeys take to the trees and many other small animals can be seen scurrying around the forest. The Olive Woodpecker, Black- Headed Oriole, Narina Turaco, Red-Billed Wood Hoopoe and the Knysna Loerie are just some of the birds you may see along the way if you keep your eyes peeled.
