The Steenbok Nature Reserve is just one of these valuable little finds, nestled away in the serene loveliness of Leisure Isle in Knysna.

Did you know? Just four kilometres from the heart of the historical little town of Knysna, Steenbok provides a refuge for those wanting to immerse themselves in nature, breathing in the fresh sea air and soaking up the crisp sunshine of the Western Cape.

This reserve is home to more than 200 species of flowering plants and more than 100 different tree types. It is home to frogs, butterflies, fish and a wide variety of bird species too. Look out for the malachite kingfisher, pied kingfisher, sandpiper, heron, spoonbill, royal ibis, kelp gull, stilt, white-breasted gannet, Cape gannet, cormorant, and the elegant black oystercatcher.

There are two gardens within the nature reserve - the Indigenous Garden and the Entrance Garden. Both showcase glorious greenery and the little animals that enjoy eating off it and living amongst it. There are also soccer and cricket pitches available for little ones with energy to burn.

Strolling along the paths or taking your dog for a walk is not just peaceful, it is a visual adventure. The walk takes you along the beaches of the lagoon, where you can swim, SUP, kitesurf or snorkel. The Knysna Heads loom just ahead, creating a spectacular backdrop to your Steenbok outing.

Knysna is situated between George and Plettenberg Bay on the Garden Route; about six hours’ drive from Cape Town, and just less than three hours from Port Elizabeth. It is renowned for its natural beauty and abundance, enticing international visitors back year after year.
