About Ballots Heights Nature Reserve

Ballots Heights Nature Reserve is nestled in the rich foliage of the Western Cape, between Wilderness and George. This is part of the breath-taking Garden Route, famed around the world for its exquisite mountains, forests, valleys and beaches. Thanks to such a rich variety of habitats, the region is also acclaimed for its wildlife.

Did you know? The Ballots Heights Nature Reserve is one of the little gems that showcase the abundant diversity of fauna and flora, testifying to the integrity of the South African experience.

Ballots Heights comprises forests, gorges and open plains. Each of these yields a different smattering of animals. Visitors can look forward to seeing porcupine, bushpig, grysbok, bontebok, ostrich, otter, zebra, grysbok, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of the elusive lynx. In addition, there are more than 200 recorded bird species within the borders of the reserve, and these are fascinating and exciting for bird watchers to spot. They include the likes of the oyster catcher, Knysna loerie, Narina trogon and Knysna woodpecker.

There are a number of hiking and walking trails throughout the reserve, which give visitors lovely opportunities to see the wildlife, breathe in the crisp African air and feel the warm sunshine. Many of these lead, via steep paths down the mountains, to little rock pools, far away from the hubbub of city life, taking those needing to cool off to a place of utter serenity.

Ballots Heights Nature Reserve is home to a beautiful forest boma, where visitors can enjoy a braai (barbecue) or a picnic, surrounded by the verdant greenery of the Western Cape, with a backing track of the many birds that call this home.

Fynbos is an exquisite plant family that is endemic to South Africa and, specifically, to the Cape. It creates a mosaic rug across the landscape, with colours – some vibrant, some muted – that adorn the mountains and form the most gorgeous of backdrops.

The Ballots Heights Nature Reserve is only 25 minutes’ drive from George and about 40 minutes from Knysna.
