Pembreys is one of those fantastic restaurants where the menu is created by a passionate trained chef / owner, with overtones of European influences, with the richness of classic French cuisine - and a massive emphasis on taste and sauces. The menu changes daily, inspired by fresh local produce and what they have growing in their garden, including beautiful fresh herbs.
A glance at one of their sample menu reveals a carefully orchestrated celebration of all these influences, starting with the antipasti buffet, which includes delights such as: griddled asparagus, pan-friend baby calamari, prawns, lime and fennel duck parfait, toasted lamb’s brains and caper and herb flower butter spicy meatballs.
The brilliant touch of serving fresh pasta, made daily, makes our mouths water. Tagliatelle and ravioli are served with a variety of toppings, including mushroom and walnut sauce. Main courses shine with all the magnificence of a top notch restaurant menu. Grilled sole, roast duck leg confit, braised oxtail, slow-roasted Karoo lamb shank and grilled sirloin steak with café de Paris butter, all make us weak in the knees!
Rumoured to have some of the best desserts around, Pembreys wows us with their their strawberry Eton mess (which we have never seen on a South African menu before), chocolate mousse cake, Amarula Crème Brulee and selection of sorbets.
