About Jonkershoek MTB Route
Where: bottom end of Merriman/Martinson / Jonkershoek roads, Stellenbosch
Level: easy to technical (Jonkershoek caters for every ability)
Type of route: network; 10 – 45 km; trails are always changing, being rebuilt etc.
Best: any time of year
Jonkershoek lies on the slopes of the Jonkershoek Mountain roughly 9 km south-east of the centre of Stellenbosch. There are many route options; configurations of between 10 and 45 km, depending on your capabilities, consisting of single track, gravel road, jeep track and the odd built jump – most of it in amongst pine trees.
Sticking to the 10 km gravel road loop is probably your best bet if you haven't ridden in Jonkershoek before (start on the lower Canary trail, in an anticlockwise direction as the blind corners can take you by surprise).
Jonkershoek is regarded as a classic training route, the downhills from the contour paths worth the effort.
Trails include: Neverending Story, Canary, Lower Canary, Fire Hut, and Lower Ellis
You can pick up a map and permits at the entrance to the reserve.
