About Jonkershoek Trails

The pine plantations of Jonkershoek happen to be the perfect places to explore on foot or in the saddle of a mountain bike. And, if it’s variety you’re after, this just happens to offer so much. The valley that is home to these trails is just south-east of the wine-producing hub of Stellenbosch, about an hour from Cape Town.

There are a number of different trail options for visitors. In terms of mountain biking trails, there are 35 kilometres of plantation roads to explore, as well as 35 kilometres of single-track. These trails range from just six kilometres to a challenging 53 kilometres, and differ in intensity and difficulty. So, there is a perfect track for your abilities and fitness level. They are categorised by colour - green for beginners, blue for intermediate riders, red for advanced cyclists, and black for the experts.

There are also hiking and trail running routes for those that want to experience the prettiness on foot. In addition to the 35 kilometres of plantation roads, there are also nine kilometres of footpaths to create a place with so many choices when it comes to choosing your trail running route.

The vegetation in this area is lush and beautiful. The mountain fynbos is incredible in its variety and colour, and is endemic to South Africa. This makes for excellent habitats for rodents and reptiles, as well as the honey badger, baboon, klipspringer, and the very shy and seldom-seen leopard.

Along the way, look out for the gorgeous array of bird species that live on and around the Jonkershoek Trails. In fact, this has become a popular spot for keen birders to hop off the saddle and take some time to listen, watch and photograph some fabulous avian species. Resident birds here include the fish eagle, black eagle, spotted eagle owl, and a variety of brightly-coloured sunbirds.

The Kleinplaas Dam offers some great fishing. So, after a hot cycle, cool off with your feet in the dam while you wait for a promising bite. The plantation roads are also ideal for horse riding. Picnic areas and toilet facilities are available at Jonkershoek.
