Nestled between the Indian Ocean and the awe-inspiring Langeberg Mountain Range, flanked by the Breede River and the Gourits River, Hessequa is a region peppered by villages and people that exude more character than its small borders would imply. Robyn Learmonth calls Riversdale her home, and is one of the artists here that draw inspiration from the beauty around them. Robyn is, perhaps, particularly inspired by her pawed feline companions.

The Cat’s Paws Pottery Studio was started up when Robyn still lived in Gauteng, after one of her cats left his paw prints in a ceramic platter that had not yet dried. This was the springboard to a whole new take on pottery design. Many of her pieces have colourful, quirky and cute cat designs on them that appeal to a far wider audience than only those who love their kitties. In addition, Robyn enjoys painting guinea fowls, florals and other fun designs on her plates, mugs, jugs, teapots, bowls, platters, and salt and pepper shakers.

In addition to the existing stock, Cat’s Paws Pottery Studio can be commissioned to custom-make items for your own home, for a special friend, or even for an event.

Visiting the studio provides a wonderful insight into the life and creativity of a true artist. Of course, there is a really warm, furry welcome awaiting visitors too, as the cats love to be part of the action.

Riversdale is situated on the world-famous Garden Route of the Western Cape. This route is known for its spectacular views and the plethora of fun activities, adventures, historical landmarks and cultural hotspots. The surrounding mountains are ideal for hiking and mountain biking for those who love to soak up the gorgeous views while testing their limits.

The Breede River and its dams are excellent for fishing and fly-fishing, swimming, kayaking, rafting, and waterskiing. Riversdale is only about 3.5 hours’ drive from Cape Town and its many tourist attractions, making it really accessible, even for only a day or two.
