Buffalo Bay, Garden Route

Idyllically perched on the seashore between Knysna and Sedgefield, this suburb feels a lot like a cute beach village. The houses here range from charming log cabins and cute fishing-style cabins to sprawling mansions and seaside villas.

The good news for visitors to the Garden Route is that so many of these magnificent homes are available as holiday rentals for the whole family. Many of the houses boast sea views of either the wild side of Buffs (where sometimes-massive waves crash dramatically onto the rocky shores) or of its tranquil bay.

Dolphins and seals can be seen playing in the ocean and surfing the waves all year round, and whales can often be seen between about July and December. Enjoy watching the impressive marine wildlife from your balcony or from the sandy, unspoilt shores of the beach.

The bay is safe for swimming, surfing, stand-up paddling, kite-surfing, kayaking, and hydrofoiling. There's kilometre after kilometre of white, pristine sands stretching all the way from Buffalo Bay to Brenton on Sea – the perfect place to take long, romantic strolls or to get some great exercise.

Along part of the beach, there are braai areas and benches, all with unique mosaic and surfboard art designs. These are great for lazy, warm afternoon braais with breath-taking views, or for the perfect Instagram backdrops!

Buffalo Bay is only about 15 or 20 minutes from Knysna, 30 minutes from George, and about 40 minutes from Plettenberg Bay.
