About Old Nectar Gardens

Old Nectar’s famous gardens in Stellenbosch are spectacular for the variety of trees, the abundance of colours, and the sheer tranquillity that infuses every part of them to create a verdant escape from the city.

These gardens, nestled just outside some of the most gorgeous wine estates in the Cape Winelands, are occupied by elm, copper beech, redwood, maple, flowering peach, magnolia and Cape chestnut trees, amongst many others.

The Gardens at Old Nectar lie at the foot of oak-laden hills and boast breath-taking views of the Jonkershoek Mountains and a picturesque dam. These are best seen from the long driveway and visitors are invited to take their time strolling the 120 metres from the entrance to get a full appreciation of the inordinate beauty.

The Gardens have a number of stunning features

The Pergola Garden
Roses, climbers and flowering bushes are best enjoyed while sitting on one of the inviting benches in this part of The Gardens.

The Round Rose Garden
Boasting a variety of hybrid tea roses, this garden includes the circular memorial bench.

The Magnolia Walk
Meander from the rose garden to the bell tower and lily dam under a duvet of magnolia and elm trees.

The Front Garden
Gorgeous paths bordered by terraced lawns, the Front Garden is characterised by colourful flowers, a Victorian-tiled ornamental pond and a number of impressive trees.

The Bench Garden
Azaleas, miniature Japanese maples, birch trees and magnolia trees are best enjoyed from the comfort of the tiled bench.

The Millstone terrace
With a millstone that dates back to the 19th century, this shady terrace enjoys the historical charm coupled with the loveliness of the oak trees and a rhododendron bush.

The Waterfall Garden
This gorgeous stretch of lawn joins the dining terraces to the lily ponds, which are fed by the waterfall mountain stream.

The Indigenous Garden
This is a stunning garden that showcases some of the most beautiful members of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

The historical university town of Stellenbosch (also an important member of the winelands) is five kilometres from The Gardens at Old Nectar, and the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve is a mere three kilometres away.
