About Meinert Wines

When winemaker Martin Meinert first bought the farm in1987 it was just as Remainder of Farm 78 in Stellenbosch. It was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in 1975 but due to a leaf-roll virus, replanting vines would commenced two years after purchase and was only completed in 2008. The winery was built in 1990 and the first vintage was created a year later, a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Commercial production only began in 1997 and a Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend was released. Their red wines are made from grapes on the Devon Crest Vineyards found 310 m above sea level. Devon crest vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and a small amount of Semillon. Meinert Sauvignon Blanc relies on grapes from growers in Elgin.

Martin Meinert is the man behind the wine and is also responsible for the new Vergelegen Winery as well as Cape Showpiece’s wines. His career as a winemaker began as assistant winemaker at Simonsig Estate in 1984 and thereafter he travelled with his family to all the great winemaking regions such as France, Australia, New Zealand and California.
