About Clos Malverne Wine Estate

Colonel JW Billingham originally named the farm Malvern Heights after the surrounding hills of Malvern in England. When Seymour Pritchard purchased it, he renamed it in the spirit of the French winemaking world to Clos Malverne. Before 1986, the estate supplied grapes to Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery until Grangehurst farm’s Jeremy Walker suggested that wine be made from their own grapes.

They started with 800 bottles and 1988 saw the first release, Cabernet Sauvignon, to go public. They began growing Pinotage, Merlot and Shiraz and a whole range of red wines, with many being blends. They became one of the first farms to produce a Cape Blend. Clos Malverne Auret, their flagship wine was altered from a Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot Bordeaux style blend to a Cape Blend (Cabernet Sauvignon / Pinotage).

This family run estate is managed by Seymour and his wife Sophia and already 70 % the wines are exported. Their daughter Belinda Pritchard welcomes visitors to the estate and looks after you at the spa. Even Seymour’s brother is the sous chef in their restaurant with Nadia Louw as the executive chef. She explains that the food is “cooked from the heart, unpretentious with earthy sophistication”.
