Cape Chamonix Wine Farm once formed part of the Huguenot Estate, La Cotte, which was granted in 1688 and still boasts the highest planted vineyards in the Cape. Once the Pickering family took ownership in 1965, they changed the farm’s name, ‘Waterval’ to ‘Chamonix’ which reminded them of the beautiful French Village. A neighbouring farm, Uitkyk was bought and the homestead converted into the French-Style restaurant La Maison de Chamonix.

Cape Chamonix is more than just a wine farm and also produces fruit to export, German-style schnapps, Chamonix Grappa, and Chamonix spring water which is bottled from crystalline mountain water. Bar mixers and various spring waters are bottled from the spring. Winemaker Gottfried Mocke brings a wealth of knowledge in viticulture and experience from time spent working in Germany, Oregon and Provence.

On the lower slopes of the old Uitkyk farm, an underground wine cellar was constructed and connects to the cosy tasting room built at the end of the 18th century and dubbed the ‘ Blacksmith’s Cottage’. Book an underground cellar tour or just visit for a wine tasting. If you desire more than fine wine and a meal, relax in the heart of the Franschhoek Village in their free standing cottages which are fully equipped for you and the family.
