The beaches of Plettenberg Bay, Keurbooms and their surrounds are renowned for their absolute, undeniable beauty. But, a select few of them have also been recognised for their outstanding features – such as safe swimming conditions, lifeguards, parking, educational quality, ablutions, and so on. The Dunes is one of the beaches that have recently been awarded the coveted Blue Flag status.

This is no mean feat when one considers that, around South Africa, there are fewer than 50 Blue Flag beaches. So, The Dunes is special; a must for families, honeymooning couples, and groups of friends that are hankering after the beach holiday of a lifetime.

The Dunes Beach is situated in Keurbooms, just minutes outside the surfing hotspot of Plettenberg Bay. The miles of pristine sandy shores are laced with the temperate waters of the Indian Ocean, where dolphins often surf the waves and whales visit between July and December. The sand is perfect for long days spent lazing in the sun (remember your high-factor sunscreen), reading a book, or playing a game of bat-and-ball. The water is enticing for swimmers, surfers, kite-surfers, paddlers and anglers.

In addition to the gorgeous Dunes Beach, Plett and Keurbooms boast plenty of other excellent attractions. The local wine farms offer tours and tastings, while there are a number of animal sanctuaries nearby that promise interactive experiences with some of Africa’s most exciting species. Knysna is fewer than 30 minutes away, while the canopy tours and forest hikes of the Tsitsikamma are about an hour away (towards the Eastern Cape). Adrenalin-junkies will definitely want to leap from the world’s highest commercial bungy bridge, Bloukrans, which is just fewer than 40 kilometres away from The Dunes.

Really, the Dunes celebrates the loveliness of the Western Cape beaches while still offering all of the conveniences and allure of the tourist hotspot that is the Garden Route.
