When George and Vanessa Austin together with Jason and Jennifer Scott arrived for the first holiday in Cape Town in 1998, little did they know that they would find relatively affordable property prices that would allow them to realise a dream. That dream was to start a premium wine estate. After searching the Cape for a property, they bought a Tulbagh farm and began transforming the land into a vineyard.
Today 16 hectares are planted to wines with three varieties grown including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Mourvedre. All grapes are harvested by hand and need irrigation due to the dry summers of Tulbagh. They ensured the farm was suitable for growing grapes organically with no fertilizers, herbicides; insecticides or synthetic fungicides are used. Chris Mullineux has the job of winemaker and brings a wealth of experience from working in France.
Some of the wines they produce include the Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards Syrah/Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 Western Cape with a spicy red and black fruits nose, Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards ‘Viktoria’ 2004 Western Cape with a meaty olive-like note, Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards Swartland Syrah 2004 with a bright and fruit palate, Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards Syrah/Mourvèdre 2003 and Tulbagh Mountain Vineyards ‘Theta’ Syrah 2003.
