About The Vilafonte Winery

The Vilafonté winery is positioned in Stellenbosch at Bosman’s crossing, at the slopes of the mountain.Michael Ratcliffe is the co-founder and managing partner of Vilafonté whilst Zelma Long is winemaking partner. Martin Smith is their winemaker and gained experience in winemaking in California before returning home.

She is one of America’s best winemakers.Then name stems from vilafontes which is one of the unique soils found in their vineyards. It also happens to be one of the oldest soil types in the world. It has a low production potential which is ideal for small vines, low yields and highly concentrated fruit.

The vineyard is 16 hectares near the Simonsberg Mountain in Paarl. The wine estate focuses on Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. They now produce two different ranges called Series M and Series C.

One side of the vineyard yields rounded fruit driven style grapes whilst the other side produces a bolder more structured style. Series M gets its name from the Malbec and Merlot which symbolize the style of this wine. Malbec brings the fruit aromas, Merlot adds softness and Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure.
