There is no shortage of excellent restaurants with pretty views in South Africa. But, Cucina di Giovanni is set apart by its superb food, great vibe, and unique setting - being watched over by the dramatic rock formations that earned Paarl its name (“paarl” means “pearl” in Afrikaans). Its convenient location puts this eatery in the heart of the Cape Winelands, which only adds another dimension to a menu that is already vibrant and extensive.

The Mediterranean style of the menu demands classics like pizzas, pastas and risottos. However, these have been beautifully crafted with fresh, modern input to ensure a wonderfully innovative selection. Freshly baked pizza bread, a pear and walnut salad, or the spicy seafood soup are just some of the excellent starters. The Peter’s pizza is a chef’s favourite and is topped with tomato, mozzarella, red onion, mushrooms, avocado and top-notch beef fillet.

The El Classico is something completely different – a pizza with prawns, calamari, mango, mascarpone cheese, mozzarella, and rocket. There are also many vegetarian and seafood options. The risotto with prawn and chorizo (known as Juliano), and the grilled liver with bacon and onion are moreish and decadent. Diners that want to find out why South Africa is acclaimed for its red meat can try the grilled fillet, sirloin or rib-eye with a selection of beautiful sauces.

The Laborie Estate is home to Cucina di Giovanni and is known for its stunning settings and elegant décor. Wine tours and tastings are rewarding here, and best finished off with a meal at Cucina di Giovanni’s.
