The Garden of remembrance is a popular attraction and a beautiful spot in Pietermaritzburg, dedicated to those who gave their lives during the First and Second World War.
South African soldiers were sent to France to provide support to the British during the First World War. The attached Delville Wood, after the village was destroyed only 142 bodies were found and buried of which 77 could be identified. Their graves lie opposite the Garden of Remembrance.
There is a Delville cross in the garden which was named the ‘weeping cross’ as it was said it would weep at each anniversary of this World War 1 battle. It is believed that once the last soldier of Delville has breathed their last breath, the weeping will stop.
This stunning garden is a sad reminder of the encounters faced by many and is filled with numerous monuments in honour of the servicemen.
