About Visit the One O' Clock Gun
If you are walking through the City of Pietermaritzburg near midday you may hear the resounding noise of the one O’clock gun. As the sound of the blast runs through your entire body, not only are you made aware that it’s time to grab some lunch but you are also reminded of the fascinating history of Pietermaritzburg and the sieges that took place here.
This gun took an immense journey on HMS Southampton, where it was moved onto HMS Fawn, previously a ship used to ferry a cargo of slaves during the Slave Trade in East Africa. This ship along with its human shipment were rescued by the British Royal Navy, taken in for repairs and named HMS Fawn.
Once in working order the HMS Fawn along with its guns onboard was sent to Durban where it hit a sandbank. The Gun was offloaded and stayed at Durban Point for quite some time before it was eventually transported to Fort Napier in Pietermaritzburg.
The gun would sound everyday apart from Sunday’s at one o’clock as well as when post from Durban arrived by ship. In 1979 the gun was put into good use again during the Anglo-Zulu War by the British soldiers before being placed back outside the City Hall in 1901.
