About King's Grant Country Retreat

Experience the charm and ambience of King's Grant, KwaZulu Natal, the historical mission station now authentically restored and converted into a splended retreat with the atmosphere of a tranquil country village.

King’s Grant is situated on the St. Isidor Estate and is surrounded by lush farmlands, dams, bushveld and wetlands. The varying habitats play host to extensive wildlife and birdlife and invite you to explore their diverse beauty. The estate also boasts a number of other historical sites such as the solitary Brickfield, Murchison House (home to Dick King’s daughter) and Schreiber’s Dam built in the 1940’s by Italian Prisoners of War.

The original living quarters of the monks and nuns have been stylishly restored and converted into eleven comfortable individually decorated B&B guestrooms, plus two fully equipped self-catering suites, accommodating up to 26 guests. All guestrooms have DStv Bouquet, tea trays, heaters / fans and private patio’s that open onto gardens where guests are invited to relax, unwind and catch a glimpse of the past.

The King’s Room is our luxurious bridal suite. Originally the monk’s lounge, this spacious suite is sumptuously decorated in rich tones and boasts a romantic Victorian bathroom and private patio overlooking the lavender gardens.

The quaint chapel, with a stately bell-tower and the original stained glass windows, stands at the heart of the village and is ideal for small and intimate ceremonies of up to 70 people. A well-trodden red brick path leads the newly-weds through gardens filled with sweet scented flowers and fountains to the Tuscan style Banquet Hall, seating up to 200 guests, for a truly romantic reception.

An alternative and exciting venue for a memorable wedding and/or reception are the rustic Brickwork barns next to the Brickfield dam that can seat up to 140 guests for the ceremony. A Marquee seating up to 250 guests can be erected next to the Barn.

The antiquity of the buildings, the gardens, lakes and the verdant farmlands offer unforgettable photographic opportunities.

The St. Isidor Conference Centre is ideal for those needing a secluded and quiet venue with minimal disturbances. It can host up to 60 delegates and has a number of breakaway venues. King’s Grant is also ideal for small workshops that require all-inclusive accommodation. The large estate also allows for excellent outdoor team building exercises and we encourage our guests to take full advantage of this unique country experience.

Picnics, Sundowners and Braai Sites

Picnic Baskets and Sundowners can be arranged for those wanting to expand on their outdoor experience. Sites such as the deserted Brickfield and Shreiba’s Hill viewpoint make an unforgettable and picturesque experience.

On-Site Activities

Excellent Bird Viewing
For keen birders, King’s Grant is a certified birder-friendly establishment and boasts a recorded number of over 208 different species of birdlife, including the endangered blue swallow. The dams and wetlands, bushveld, mountain sourveld and farmland provide a rich variety of habitats for the birdlife.

Water Activities
We have three dams on site and offer activities such as Canadian canoeing, fishing (Bass, Barble, and Grass Carp) and sailing. Canadian canoes are available for hire.

We encourage our guests to explore the farm and offer a number of walks and mountain biking (bring your own bike) opportunities where one can meander through the valleys and up the hills whilst enjoying the fresh country air!

The Artist
The artists paradise! Owing to the historic red brick buildings and the unique character and atmosphere, Kings Grant offers a truly visual experience that will undoubtedly excite and inspire every artist. We house a well-lit art studio and encourage our guests to bring their own equipment and materials for an enchanting art retreat.
