4x4 and Four Wheel Drive Adventures

The KwaZulu Natal Province boasts some of the most spectacular scenery that South Africa has to offer. From the magical mountain range of the Drakensberg to the Wilderness areas in Maputaland, the coast and the Midlands, KwaZulu Natal has so much to offer 4x4 enthusiasts.

Did you know? As one of the highest mountain passes in the country, Sani Pass is an impressive 2,865 metres above sea level.

Cedarville is a little town nestled on the foothills of the south most Drakensberg mountains. It is the gateway to three magnificent mountain passes into Lesotho and all within an hours drive where either the Katse Dam, the shimmering Maletsunyane waterfall or Maseru can be explored.

There are several, challenging one day 4x4 routes that can be enjoyed which explore these wonders left undiscovered. Fantastic accommodation in the Drakensberg is provided where you can gather with your friends and family around the fire and chat about your KwaZulu Natal 4x4 adventures.

The Cetshwayo's Retreat 4x4 trail starts and ends at Eshowe and explores the lush Nkandla Forest, the Insuze Gorge, Thukela River at Jameson's Drift, the shimmering Shushu Hot Springs and many more awesome South African wonders.

Situated in the Umkomaas Valley 45 min from Pietermaritzburg and 90 min from Durban is Dlangala.

Traverse the challenging 4x4 trails in the spectacular scenery of the Umkomaas Valley. Gaze over the multitude of hills as far as your eye can see and the valleys of the wilderness area. A forty thousand hectare wilderness area awaits your discovery, where birdlife and wildlife abound in this expanse of Africa.

The Sani Pass is a fairly challenging route with access from Himeville in the picturesque Southern Drakensberg area. The pass twists and climbs upwards, beneath towering cliffs and buttresses, reaching the top of the Drakensberg escarpment at 2,873m. Experience the most magnificent and breathe-taking scenery on this South African 4x4 trail.

The Thule Beacon Trail is from the lovely St Bernards Peak in East Griqualand and is renowned as a tough 4x4 trail that takes you high into the magnificent southern Drakensberg mountains. This trail is far tougher and will have the adrenaline pumping harder than on the Sani Pass.

Tour operators offer 4x4 trails for novice and experienced drivers. The trails will take you along the scenic river's edge, through amazing river crossings, along magnificent cliff faces, into muddy areas, over log bridges, narrow bush paths and up rocky hill climbs.

These guided trails afford one the opportunity of a lifetime to travel down scenic pathways to places where the general public cannot go and is ideal for bird watching enthusiasts.
