About Tatham Art Gallery

Let art be part of your KwaZulu-Natal experience when you book accommodation in Pietermaritzburg. This vibrant city is home to the Tatham Art Gallery, which is full of exquisite art pieces, interesting crafts, and a variety of gifts and keepsakes.

The Tatham Gallery was built in 1903 and continues to be one of the most significant art museums in the country, because it showcases such a diverse collection of pieces. There are permanent exhibitions that include works by local and European artists. The art that comes from KwaZulu-Natal enjoys its own special space, where these nearby artists can enjoy some excellent exposure. The Ceramics Room is also part of the permanent exhibition and is dedicated, as its name implies, to beautiful pottery pieces.

Major exhibitions are held in the Main Exhibition Room; and may have the work of one specific artist or a whole group of creatives on display. Sometimes, this exhibition focuses just on showcasing the local artists from KwaZulu-Natal, whose work may be pulled from the permanent exhibition for a really inspiring collection.

There is also room for smaller exhibitions that are only temporary. This means that Tatham Art Gallery offers a dynamic experience for its visitors just about every time they visit the area.

The Tatham Shop sells an array of goodies that make awesome gifts for friends and family, or perfect reminders of your time in South Africa. It is known for its handmade crafts that range from ceramics and beads to embroidery and woven goods.

After exploring the arts and crafts, head to Café Tatham for a hot cappuccino or a refreshing cold drink, or catch up with friends over lunch. The eclectic décor makes for a comfy spot to enjoy a laugh or to have a business meeting. The Sunday lunch buffet is a must.

Pietermaritzburg is the capital city of the province, and is about an hour from Durban and the King Shaka International Airport.
