About Rijk Private Cellar
Neville Dorrington and his family began to search for a wine farm to purchase after living in the bustling city of Cape Town for twenty years. They stumbled upon the beauty of the Tulbagh valley only one hour away and decide they wanted to develop an estate themselves. They purchased the farm with its 136 hectares of uncultivated soil and named the farm after the Cape Governor, Rijk Tulbagh. The town was named after him when he governed from 1751 to 1771.
They have always loved great wine and food and decided to start from the beginning and set about planting virus free vines. It has all the qualities of a fruitful wine estate such as sufficient water, perfect soil for yielding high quality grapes and slopes facing in all directions. Positioned between the Winterhoek and Witzenberg mountains, its views are something to behold.
After the farm development began in 1996, 14 hectares of vines were planted the following year and their first wines were introduced to the public in 2000. Their boutique winery is one whose efforts are dedicated to the production of Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and Shiraz and their wine is said to be “a true reflection of our people, soil, vineyard management, winemaking and time.”
